“Anytime there’s something you know you should do, but you feel uncertain, afraid, or overwhelmed… just take control by counting backwards 5- 4- 3- 2- 1. That’ll quiet your mind. Then, move when you get to “1. ― Mel Robbins, The 5 Second Rule: Transform Your Life, Work, and Confidence with Everyday Courage
I can't get enough of Mel Robbins! It is crazy really. I relate to her in so many ways, and the advice she gives speaks directly to me. We just went on a ski trip to my favorite place, Telluride, and I thought I was going to write about my last day of skiing. I will get back to that, but first, let me tell you about the day I would usually stay inside.
The forecast called for snow and wind - my two least favorite conditions for skiing. I decide to go for it. We get to the locker room, and my goggle lenses for snow conditions were missing, it could have been an easy out (not to mention other reasons....people screaming and shouting in the locker room). However, I got the goggle situation fixed and off we went. I can not tell you how many times that day I said to myself "5-4-3-2-1 you've got this....if it were too windy they would close the lifts or 5-4-3-2-1 just breath." At times it was squally with big gusts of winds, but other times the snow was gently falling, and it was beautiful! I was proud of myself, and it felt good to face my fears.
Spring break is over, and I am back at school, and I have the same feelings that I did on the mountain. It would be so much easier to stay inside (aka not do school). However, what I am learning is that feelings will rise up, and that is normal, but I can choose how I respond. Do I feel like writing a research paper or making an efolio or taking a test..... not really! But do I want to graduate from Auburn - absolutely 100% - YES! Why? It is something I just have to do! Just like that day on the mountain.
Now back to the last day of skiing! We had skied for four days, and out of those four days only one was amassing (no that's not a spelling error)! That last day everything felt right! The conditions were awesome, every run felt good, and lunch (the most important part of the day) was incredible! I didn't even think I would have the energy to ski the last day. What if I would have stayed in and not gone out??? I would have missed the most amassing day!
So what I have concluded is that not every day can be amassing and that's okay! And some days will be tough, and I am not going to feel like doing what I need to do. But what I can do is 5-4-3-2-1 GO!
Thank You, Mel Robbins for this incredible gift!
